Holy Thursday and Easter Blessing

On Holy Thursday the grade six students at Pope John Paul II School led the school community in a retelling of the Stations of the Cross.  The students marked this solemn occasion with a recognition of the contributions of First Nations peoples to Canadian culture and art as part of Aboriginal Awareness month. The Aboriginal images depicting the Easter Story are by Cree Artist, Ovide Bighetty. The series is known as ‘Kisemanito Pakitinasuwin - The Creator’s Sacrifice,’ and illustrates the Christian teachings of the Easter story in a way consistent with both Aboriginal symbolism and Biblical sources. These beautiful images were recreated for The Holy Thursday liturgy by the grade six students. The art work speaks of love, grace, and sacrifice. The liturgy and artwork had a profound impact on all the students, staff and parents who attended the liturgy. It was truly a reverent and holy moment.

Thank you to Mrs. Sorrenti-Thomas, Mrs. Kayemba, and Mr. Page for preparing the students to lead the liturgy and for nurturing their artistic endeavours and to Mrs. Sherry Saevil, the Aboriginal Liaison Officer for the Halton Catholic District School Board, and Mr. Jack Nigro, Superintendent of Curriculum Services, for your interest and support.

On behalf of the staff at Pope John Paul II School, we wish you and your families a blessed Easter.

Mr. Ceelen and Mrs. Morrissey
