SUMMER LITERACY AND MATH PROGRAMS Grade 7 & 8 (See Current Forms and Correspondence for information and the registration form)

Intermediate Transitional Math Camp-
This two week summer program is designed for students who would benefit from additional practice and assistance to ease their transition into Grade 8 & 9.  As part of the program, students will have access to computers.

Numeracy Through Robotics Camp-

Robotics is a motivational tool that brings math, science and technology to life in the classroom.  Robotics enables students to "do" mathematics rather than study it.  Robotics offers students a unit of study that implicitly demonstrates the application of math, science and technology as well as reinforce numeracy skills such as Numbers and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof; and Communications.  Students will have a basic understanding of sensor based measurements, applications for angles, counted and timed events and other computer-based math.

Literacy Through the Arts Camp-
The arts can play a vital role in literacy.  Students can be initially engaged in reading by focusing on their comprehension and enjoyment of a given story, poem, chant, or rhyme.  Fundamentally, balanced literacy revolves around two primary strands, a reading strand and a writing strand, each of which mirrors the other.
Principal and teacher recommendations are requested for these programs, however, parents may initiate an application.  Registrations forms with dates, times and locations are available from your child's school/teacher and must be returned to the home school.  They are also available at
www.mertoncentre.com
Parents are responsible for transportation arrangements for all programs.

You will be contacted ONLY if your course is full, transferred or cancelled, otherwise, report to the summer school location on the first day.

Coin Collection for Holy Childhood Association

Many thanks for your support of our Lenten outreach this year is in support of the Holy Child Association. Students were encouraged to bring in coins during Lent. Together, we raised $489.96!

Holy Childhood Association's Lenten Appeal offers our children the opportunity to pray for the children of the missions and encourages them to make sacrifices which contribute to this good work. Founded in 1843, the Holy Childhood Association is an international organization whose membership is made up of students in Catholic elementary schools and religious education programs; it is an organization dedicated to fostering children's awareness of the missionary nature of the Church. More than 100 countries participate in this effort to bring the young of different cultures closer. HCA is unique in that the assistance it provides to less fortunate children comes almost entirely from those their own age. Funds raised go toward orphanages, slum areas, schools, hospitals refugee camps and handicapped centers to provide food, medicine, clean water, shelter, and education.

Waste-free Lunch Wednesdays 2012

At St. Michael school we want to be stewards of God’s creation.  One of the ways that we can do this is by reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.  We have been learning about recycling.  The next step is to try to eliminate waste altogether.  The Environmental Club at St. Michael is encouraging a Waste-free lunch each Wednesday.  With everyone’s cooperation our Waste-free lunch Wednesdays should be a success.

The students, staff and parents of St. Michael have contributed immensely to the success of the recycling program you should be congratulated. Keep up the good work and let’s continue being good stewards of the earth.

A new Columbian Squires Circle has formed at Mary Mother of God Parish (for 10-17 year old Catholic boys)

  • A new Columbian Squires Circle, which is a Parish based service group for young Catholic men ages 10-17, has formed through the work of the Mary Mother of God Knights of Columbus Council 14446. The name of the Circle, still to be formally approved, looks as though it will be the “Sir Knight Nathaniel Haynes Squires Circle”. The current charter group of 17 young men will be helping out with activities at Mary Mother of God Parish and will be mentored by members of the Knights of Columbus.

If you have a son aged 10-17 who might be interested in this type of program, even if you do not belong to Mary Mother of God Parish, or if you would simply like more information about Columbian Squires, please visit the local Knights of Columbus website (http://kofc14446.ca/squires.html), the Ontario Columbian Squires website (http://www.ontariosquires.com/) or contact the Chief Counsellor, David Fisher, (905-257-3316) chancellor@kofc14446.ca for more details.

We Care Health Services Pediculosis Program

We Care Health Services have implemented a dedicated phone line for Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic School Board for improved efficiencies in regards to the Pediculosis Program. This phone line is to stream line all incoming calls from parents and schools.

Benefits for Parents & Schools

Direct contact with the Coordinator in addition to daily school clinic information schedule recorded for parents to listen to if line is busy (they also have the option to leave a message for a call back)

Daily evening message to advise parents of the next morning’s starting points in each section of the Halton region to avoid calling in the morning.

Schools can call and if need be leave a message for the coordinator advising how many classes need to be checked as well as their break times.

Parents can leave messages throughout the day or in the evenings should they require a callback for any reason

We are confident that this dedicated line will help with high call volumes and continuing a service level of 24 hour maximum turn-around time. Service levels will not be compromised as the current phone numbers are still valid during the transition phase.

We would ask that the phone numbers on your website be changed as soon as possible and all office staff is provided with this memo. We look forward to your feedback and any questions or concerns that you may have.
