St. Joseph School History

St. Joseph School had its humble beginnings in an 18th century stone house on School Lane in Acton.  In 1977, the house was leased to the Halton Catholic Separate School Board by the Halton Board of Education and used as Acton's first Catholic School. The school was named St. Joseph in honour of Canada's  patron saint and the parish of St Joseph which was established in Acton in 1857. Mr. Sean Brigg, the first principal, organized the Physical Education classes at the local Scout hall.  In 1982, Mr. Fred Springer accepted the keys to a new 11 classroom facility on Mill Street West.  The school overlooking Fairy Lake opened with a staff of 16 teachers.  Given its proximity to water, it was natural that the school teams would be known as the Lakers.  The school population continued to grow necessitating an addition built in 2000.  These new classrooms and the four portables accommodate our current student population of 469 and a staff of 42.

Patron Saint - St. Joseph

St. Joseph is the patron saint of our school. He was the foster father of Jesus and engaged to Mary. He is the patron of many groups and causes including the family, workers, and carpenters, Canada, immigrants, happy death, expectant mothers, social justice and the Universal Church. His feast day is March 19.
