Homework / Study TipsSuccess in school is possible only if regular work habits are established by the students.  This is particularly true at the intermediate level.  Students are responsible for being prepared with correct notebooks and suitable writing equipment.  A binder or carrying case is recommended.  Homework should be completed as assigned.
It is important that the homework location:
  - is consistent
  - is well lit
   - provides area for writing
  - is easily supervised
  - is distraction free
If for some reason, the homework assignment is not completed, the teacher concerned should be informed and a reason should be given.
       Ideally homework:
   - trains pupils to plan and study on their own.
   - gives them an opportunity to review and master skills taught in class.
  - encourages them to explore creatively in directions of their own choosing.

Homework is an opportunity for a student to work independently at consolidating the concepts and skills presented in the classroom.  It is not punishment or busy work.  For parents, the challenge with homework is to strike a balance between detachment and over involvement.

THE FOLLOWING IS A GUIDELINE ONLY
PRIMARY
As a general rule, children in Primary Grades (Grades 1 to 3) are not given homework as such.  A child is expected to finish work assigned in class.  This should be 15 - 30 minutes. In the event of school absence, teachers and parents will work out a plan to catch up on the work.  The child will be expected to take home and complete such work.

Research demonstrates that 20 minutes of daily home reading is beneficial to reading success. Reading and number fact games may be an effective way for parents to be involved.

JUNIOR
In the Junior Grades (Grades 4 to 6) homework may need to be done for:
  special projects
  class assignments
  incomplete work
Generally, 30-45 minutes per day is required.  Notebook organization and review should occur nightly and reading for enjoyment should be encouraged.

INTERMEDIATE
In the Intermediate Grades (Grades 7 to 8), it is expected that students may need to do homework each night for:
  special projects of assignments
incomplete work assigned during class time assigned homework

Generally speaking, Intermediate students should be spending 45 minutes to one hour on homework daily unless more time is required due to:
  - poor utilization of class time
  - absence
  - poor time management in the  completion of special projects
  - Test/exam preparation

Teachers attempt to spread out the work load for students so special assignments, tests, speeches and projects are not due at the same time.  On a regular basis, teachers should be sending parents information outlining what students are doing and what special projects or tests are coming up in the near future.  With some students, it may be necessary for parents to help students to budget their time more wisely.
